  • *Important Note:** This position includes a mandatory 2-year trial period. Your continued employment is contingent upon performance, conduct, and advancing public interest as determined by the agency.
  • *Key Responsibilities:**
  • Apply advanced investigative, protective, and law enforcement techniques.
  • Plan and conduct complex criminal investigations into Federal law violations.
  • Collect, analyze, and evaluate facts, evidence, and data to reach sound conclusions.
  • Conduct interviews and interrogations, make arrests, and execute searches and seizures.
  • Lead or partner with diverse teams to achieve critical mission objectives.
  • (For higher levels) Identify problem areas, propose solutions, manage complex projects, and allocate resources.
  • *Qualifications & Compensation (Based on Grade Level):**
  • **GL-07 (Starting Salary: $48,371)**
* Bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) (e.g., GPA 3.0+, upper 1/3 class rank, or national honor society membership). * **or** One full year of graduate-level education (18 semester hours). * **or** One year of specialized experience in investigative, protective, or law enforcement methods, demonstrating initiative, attention to detail, judgment in data collection/analysis, and teamwork.

  • **GL-09 (Starting Salary: $53,945)**
* Master's or equivalent graduate degree (e.g., LL.B., J.D.) or two full years of progressively higher graduate education in a related field. * **or** One year of specialized experience equivalent to GL-7, applying law enforcement/investigative techniques, problem-solving, team responsibility, leading meetings, setting priorities, and effective partnering. * **or** A combination of specialized experience and related graduate education beyond the first full year.

  • **GS-11 (Starting Salary: $63,163)**
* Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (e.g., LL.M.) or three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education. * **or** One year of specialized experience equivalent to GL-9, planning/conducting complex criminal investigations, evidence analysis, interviews/interrogations, arrests, searches/seizures, managing projects, and leveraging networks. * **or** A combination of specialized experience and doctoral-level graduate education beyond the first full year.

  • *Application & Assessment Process:**

All applicants must successfully pass multi-phase assessments to receive final employment consideration:

  • **Phase I:** National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Special Agent Entrance Exam (SAEE), Applicant Physical Abilities Test (APAT), and Interview.
  • **Phase II:** Credit Check, Security Interview, Polygraph examination, Drug screening, Medical examination, and a Top-Secret Background Investigation.
  • *Physical Requirements:**
Successfully complete the Applicant Physical Abilities Test (APAT), which includes push-ups, sit-ups, Illinois Agility Run, and a 1.5-mile run. This test assesses your fitness for rigorous physical training.

  • *Drug Policy:** The agency maintains stringent guidelines regarding illegal drug usage. Your history will be reviewed in accordance with this policy.
  • *Ideal Candidate Profile (CAT Program - Combat Arms & Tactical):**

Candidates with one or more of the following backgrounds are highly desired (relevant documentation required):

  • Occupied a combat arms occupational specialty in the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • Served as a tactical team member (non-support/administrative role) in a Department of Defense special operations unit.
  • Served as a military member with direct combat experience.
  • Served as a member of a federal, state, or local law enforcement tactical team.
  • Participated as a student athlete at a college or university.
  • Participated as a professional athlete in a sport.
