- **Education & Bar Membership:** Must be a graduate of an ABA-accredited law school and an active member in good standing of the bar of a U.S. state, territory, D.C., or Puerto Rico.
- **Experience:** All qualifying experience, including volunteer work (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps), is recognized and credited.
- **Background Investigation:** As a federal law enforcement agency, CBP requires all applicants to pass a thorough background investigation. This includes inquiries into felony convictions, current felony charges, and any use of illegal drugs or non-prescribed controlled substances.
- **Residency:** Applicants not currently employed by CBP must have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates for at least three of the last five years. Exceptions may apply for U.S. government service (federal civilian or military), accompanying dependents, U.S. college-sponsored study abroad, or roles supporting the U.S. government (contractor, intern, consultant, volunteer).
