Summary
DEA Diversion Investigator conducting complex regulatory investigations of controlled substance handlers to prevent diversion.
Join the DEA as a Diversion Investigator, where you will play a critical role in preventing the illicit diversion of controlled substances and chemicals. This position involves complex regulatory inspections, investigations, and collaboration to ensure compliance and support enforcement actions across various industries.
- *Key Responsibilities:**
- Conduct complex regulatory investigations and inspections of pharmaceutical and chemical handlers (legitimate and illegitimate).
- Collect, analyze, and present documentation, evidence, and statements to support regulatory, civil, or judicial actions.
- Evaluate industry controls related to procurement, manufacturing, distribution, security, and record-keeping.
- Prepare detailed reports, recommendations, and other working documents on complex program issues.
- Coordinate the development and release of substantive program information (e.g., press releases, fact sheets).
- Resolve disputed facts and uncover evidence through in-depth record searches.
- Provide expert advice to private industry on establishing quotas and closed distribution systems.
- Interpret mission policy, develop, and recommend strategies for diversion control issues.
- Collaborate with management, colleagues, and various stakeholders to exchange information and address complex problems.
- Oversee proper destruction or reconditioning of controlled substances.
- *Mandatory Training Requirement:**
- Successful completion of the 12-week in-residence Basic Diversion Investigator Course (BDIT) at the DEA training academy in Quantico, Virginia is required.
- *Experience & Qualification Requirements:**
- **GS-09:** One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07, including preparing reports, analyzing conflicting information, presenting orally, collaborating, and following detailed instructions.
- **GS-11:** One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-09, including coordinating information release, conducting multi-person/organization investigations, responding to information requests, resolving disputes, and overseeing controlled substance destruction.
- **GS-12:** One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11, including conducting full-range complex inspections, evaluating industry controls, compiling evidence, independently planning reports, and analyzing complex problems with stakeholders.
- **GS-13:** One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-12, including conducting the full range of complex regulatory investigations, advising industry on diversion prevention, interpreting policy, and developing diversion control strategies.
