Summary

Lead federal criminal investigations, conduct protective details, and enforce laws for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is seeking experienced Criminal Investigators at the GS-12 and GS-13 grade levels. This role involves conducting complex criminal and administrative investigations, ensuring protective services, and enforcing federal laws.

  • *Responsibilities:**
  • **GS-12:** Conduct protective details, assist with protection planning and threat assessments for senior officials and dignitaries. Perform adversarial and witness interviews. Lead criminal and administrative investigations into employee misconduct. Collect forensic or other evidence.
  • **GS-13 (in addition to GS-12 duties):** Lead complex criminal investigations involving employee misconduct, corruption, extortion, and national security violations. Coordinate multi-agency investigations across multiple jurisdictions. Draft and execute search warrants, arrest warrants, subpoenas, and electronic surveillance orders. Prepare detailed Reports of Investigations.
  • *Qualifications:**
  • **GS-12:** One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level, performing duties similar to those listed above.
  • **GS-13:** One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level, performing duties similar to those listed above.
  • *Note:* Both paid and unpaid/volunteer experience is credited. All qualifications must be met by 10/20/2025.
  • *Mandatory Requirements:**
  • **Background Investigation:** Subject to a thorough background investigation, including checks for felony convictions and illegal drug use.
  • **Medical Examination:** Must pass a medical and physical examination to ensure capability for essential job functions.
  • **Firearms Requirement:** Required to carry a firearm and maintain proficiency. Must meet federal eligibility standards (e.g., no felony or domestic violence convictions).
  • **Polygraph Examination:** Required for this position (exceptions may apply for current CBP LE, certain veterans, or prior federal polygraphs).
  • **Drug Testing:** Requires pre-employment drug testing and is subject to random drug tests.
  • **U.S. Residency:** Must have resided in the U.S. or its protectorates for at least three of the last five years (waiver possible under specific conditions).
  • **Probationary Period:** New federal employees serve a one-year probationary period.
  • **Disclosure:** Current or former political appointees must disclose this information.
