This vital role involves meticulously editing and formatting legislative proceedings, ensuring accuracy and strict adherence to parliamentary procedures and established government publication styles. You will contribute to the official record through precise proofreading and formatting of complex material.

  • *Key Responsibilities:**
  • Accurately edit and scope legislative proceedings.
  • Ensure all material conforms to parliamentary procedures and GPO formats/styles.
  • Proofread large volumes of complex material for technical and grammatical errors.
  • Format information according to approved GPO style for printing.
  • Operate Computer Assisted Transcription (CAT) editing programs.
  • *Required Qualifications:**
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 5-8 years of professional editing or scoping experience.
  • Strong command of English grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, spelling, and vocabulary.
  • Proficiency in Computer Assisted Transcription (CAT) editing programs.
  • Critical thinking skills for accurate and timely transcript completion.
  • Ability to work long, unscheduled, and unpredictable hours as dictated by the Senate schedule.
  • *Preferred Knowledge & Skills:**
  • Basic knowledge of the Senate, legislative process, and parliamentary procedures.
  • Familiarity with GPO formats, styles, languages, and processes.
  • Knowledge of American history, civics, and current events.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with an ability to use tact and diplomacy.
  • Proficiency with computer and relevant software programs.
  • *Work Environment & Demands:**
  • Primarily an office-based, sedentary role requiring extensive computer use.
  • Requires regular, predictable, and punctual in-office attendance.
  • Must be prepared to work extended and unscheduled hours tied to the Senate floor schedule.
  • Ability to occasionally walk, stand, bend, and lift items up to 25 pounds.
  • Potential for travel or relocation outside Washington, D.C., during emergencies.
