Job Description

Summary

Seeking a Certified Real-Time Captioner with 5-8 years of experience to provide highly accurate captions for Senate proceedings.

Join our team as a Real-Time Captioner, responsible for providing highly accurate verbatim captions for Senate proceedings in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

  • *Key Responsibilities:**
  • Produce near verbatim real-time captions with a minimum 98.5% accuracy rate.
  • Adapt quickly to new and unfamiliar subject matter.
  • Make rapid, informed decisions in a demanding work setting.
  • Accurately identify Senators by sight, voice, state, or seniority.
  • Listen, comprehend, and write for continuity, sense, and detail.
  • Retain and recall information efficiently while captioning in real-time.
  • *Minimum Qualifications:**
  • Graduation from a captioning or court-reporter training program, plus specialized closed-captioning training.
  • 5-8 years of professional field experience.
  • Registered Professional Reporter (RPR), Certified Real-Time Captioner (CRC), or equivalent certification.
  • *Required Skills & Knowledge:**
  • Expert knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary.
  • Proficiency with computerized transcription systems and broadcast equipment.
  • Ability to react quickly, forming and finger-spelling words when dictionary entries are unavailable.
  • Strong knowledge of Senate organization, congressional documents, terminology, American history, and current events.
  • Basic knowledge of the legislative process preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • *Work Environment & Expectations:**
  • Requires working extended and unscheduled hours as dictated by the Senate schedule.
  • Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is essential.
  • Physical presence in the office is required, with potential travel for emergency Senate relocation.
