Summary

Ensure radiation safety and compliance through policy review, inspections, hazard assessment, and managing radioactive materials.

Join our team as an Industrial Hygienist, specializing in radiation safety. You will play a crucial role in protecting worker health by recognizing, evaluating, and controlling environmental conditions that could lead to sickness or injury.

  • *Key Responsibilities:**
  • Review and provide expert guidance on radiation safety policies and programs.
  • Conduct periodic inspections to identify and assess radiation safety hazards.
  • Lead the development and execution of radiation safety audits.
  • Manage and provide guidance on radioactive waste, dosimetry, and contamination control.
  • Conduct laboratory and workplace surveys, ensuring compliance and accurate recordkeeping.
  • Develop and deliver specific training related to the safe use of radioactive materials.
  • Oversee contract management related to radiation safety.
  • Ensure strict compliance with byproduct materials licenses.
  • Implement measures to protect against unwarranted exposures to ionizing radiation.
  • **(GS-13 only):** Resolve complex hazardous material issues.
  • *Qualifications:**
  • *Education:**
  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health Sciences, Occupational and Environmental Health, Toxicology, Safety Sciences, or a related science (from a U.S. Department of Education recognized accredited institution).
  • **or** Bachelor's degree in engineering, physical science, or life science, including 12 semester hours in chemistry (with organic chemistry) and 18 additional semester hours in chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene.
  • **or** Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
  • *Experience:**
  • **GS-12:** One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level, demonstrating professional knowledge and application of industrial hygiene principles, specifically in radiation safety. This includes experience with dosimetry, radioactive waste management, laboratory surveys, inventory/recordkeeping, contamination control, training, contract management, byproduct materials license compliance, and protection against ionizing radiation exposure.
  • **GS-13:** One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level, encompassing all GS-12 requirements, plus demonstrated experience in resolving potential hazardous material issues.
  • *Required Skills & Knowledge:**
  • Professional knowledge of industrial hygiene theory and application, including related sciences like physics and engineering controls.
  • Experience in acquiring quantitative and qualitative data and measuring exposures to chemical, physical, and biological stresses.
  • Ability to analyze data and predict the health effects of exposures.
  • Expertise in selecting and recommending appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education/training, and personal protective equipment.
