Summary

Lead severe weather forecasting, analysis, and preparedness planning, providing team guidance with a meteorology or atmospheric science degree.

## Meteorologist (GS-14)

Join our team as a Meteorologist, focusing on critical severe weather forecasting, analysis, and preparedness planning. This role requires a strong scientific background and leadership skills to guide team efforts in ensuring public safety.

### Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and preparation of severe weather forecasts and warnings (e.g., severe storms, flash floods, winter storms, marine warnings).
  • Collaborate with fellow forecasters and personnel to develop comprehensive action and preparedness plans for severe weather events.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis and evaluation of weather forecasts to ensure accuracy and quality.
  • Provide project support and guidance to a team, including assigning work and setting priorities, to ensure successful achievement of goals and objectives.
### Required Education (To qualify for the 1340 series):

Applicants must possess a degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related natural science major that includes:

  • **Meteorology/Atmospheric Science:** At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours, including a minimum of:
* 6 semester hours: Atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics* * 6 semester hours: Analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale) * 3 semester hours: Physical meteorology * 2 semester hours: Remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation
  • **Physics:** 6 semester hours, with at least one course including laboratory sessions.*
  • **Mathematics:** 3 semester hours in ordinary differential equations.*
  • **Physical Science Electives:** At least 9 semester hours from three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.
  • Note: Calculus courses (appropriate for a physical science major) are a prerequisite or corequisite for coursework in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations.
  • *or** A combination of the above coursework and appropriate experience or additional education.
### Required Experience (GS-14 Level):

In addition to meeting the basic educational requirements, applicants must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in the Federal service. This specialized experience MUST include all of the following:

  • Participating in the development or preparation of severe weather forecasts or warnings such as severe storms, flash floods, winter storms, or marine warnings.
  • Communicating and collaborating with other forecasters or personnel to develop action or preparedness plans for severe weather.
  • Analyzing and evaluating weather forecasts to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Providing project support or guidance to a team or personnel to ensure goals and objectives are met such as assigning work and setting priorities.
