Job Description

Summary

Seeking an experienced General Attorney (Tax) Special Counsel to resolve complex federal tax issues affecting taxpayer rights and low-income individuals.

We are seeking a highly experienced General Attorney (Tax) Special Counsel (GS-15) to address complex federal tax issues, focusing on taxpayer rights and low-income individuals.

  • *Responsibilities May Include:**
  • Conducting extensive research, analysis, and evaluation of complex and difficult legal tax questions.
  • Addressing substantive federal tax issues impacting taxpayer rights, tax practice, and administration.
  • Working on legal issues that specifically affect low-income taxpayers.
  • *(Desired but not required)* Advocating for taxpayer rights or improving tax administration to resolve systemic tax issues.
  • *Basic Qualifications:**
  • Possess a J.D. or LL.B. degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school.
  • Be an active member in good standing of the bar of a U.S. State, Commonwealth, Territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • *Experience Requirements (GS-15 Level):**
  • Minimum one (1) year of general professional legal experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years of professional legal tax experience gained *after* Bar Admission, which must include:
* Assignments involving complex and difficult legal questions requiring extensive research, analysis, and evaluation. * Experience with substantive federal tax issues impacting taxpayer rights, federal tax practice, and/or tax administration/procedural issues. * Experience working with issues that impact low-income taxpayers.
  • At least one year of the professional legal experience must be equivalent to the GS-14 federal service level.
  • *Substitution:**
  • An LL.M. degree in a relevant field may substitute for the one year of general professional legal experience.
  • *Note:** Volunteer legal experience counts towards qualification. Please detail all experience with dates and hours per week on your resume.
