Summary
Federal Criminal Investigator (GS-09/11) conducts investigations, interviews suspects, manages evidence, and testifies in court.
Join our team as a Criminal Investigator (GS-09/11) to conduct federal criminal investigations. This role involves gathering critical information, interviewing suspects, managing evidence, and providing testimony in court. High-level investigators (GS-11) will also develop operational plans and determine investigative priorities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct federal criminal investigations.
- Gather and report factual information.
- Interview and interrogate persons suspected of law violations.
- Organize and prepare evidence for grand jury, hearings, and trials.
- Testify in court proceedings.
- (GS-11 only) Develop operational plans and determine investigative priorities.
Qualifications (GS-09):
- Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07, performing duties like federal criminal investigations, information gathering, suspect interviews, evidence organization, and court testimony.
- Education: A Master's or equivalent graduate degree; or two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education (related to the position); or an LL.B. or J.D. (if related).
- Combination: A combination of successfully completed graduate education (in excess of one full year) and specialized experience.
Qualifications (GS-11):
- Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-09, performing duties such as developing operational plans and investigative priorities, interviewing suspects, organizing evidence, and court testimony.
- Education: A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education (related to the position); or an LL.M. (if related).
- Combination: A combination of successfully completed graduate education (in excess of two full years) and specialized experience.
Essential Conditions of Employment:
- Physical Requirements: Must meet physical demands including moderate to arduous exertion, ability to use firearms, exposure to diverse weather, manual dexterity, good vision, hearing (with or without aid), and emotional/mental stability.
- Firearms Qualification: Required to qualify with and carry a firearm.
- Lautenberg Amendment: Must not have a conviction for a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
- Driver's License: Possess a valid automobile driver's license at the time of appointment.
- Training: Must attend and graduate from the Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP), unless previously completed.
- Financial Disclosure: Required to file an OGE-450 Confidential Financial Disclosure Report annually.
- Age Requirement: Must be at least 21 years old. Generally, candidates must be referred for selection consideration before their 37th birthday (exceptions apply for preference-eligible veterans or current/former federal law enforcement personnel).
Federal Career Transition Programs:
- Eligible displaced or surplus federal employees (ICTAP/CTAP) may receive selection priority. Applicants must provide proof of eligibility and be found "well-qualified" (score of 85+).
