Summary
Lead strategic public affairs communications, media relations, and executive counsel to shape policy and enhance Lumen's reputation.
As the Director of Public Affairs Communications, you will lead strategic communications to advance Lumen's public policy, legislative, and regulatory priorities. This highly visible role requires close partnership with government affairs, legal, and business leaders to develop compelling narratives that position Lumen as a trusted national asset for secure, future-ready network infrastructure.
- *Key Responsibilities:**
- Develop and execute integrated public affairs communications strategies aligned with corporate objectives.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to government affairs leadership, providing strategic counsel on public policy, regulatory developments, and reputational risks.
- Cultivate and manage communications relationships with key stakeholders, including government officials, regulatory bodies, and industry associations.
- Lead media relations efforts, including proactive pitching, rapid response, and crisis communication related to public policy.
- Oversee the creation of high-impact communication materials (press releases, op-eds, speeches, social media content).
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Legal, Regulatory, Investor Relations, Marketing, and HR to ensure message consistency.
- Partner with public policy teams to track legislative/regulatory developments and provide timely communications recommendations.
- Lead the development and execution of crisis communication plans, acting as a spokesperson when needed.
- Monitor public opinion and reputation, leveraging analytics to refine public affairs initiatives.
- Build best-in-class public affairs communications practices and processes.
- Mentor and lead a high-performing team of public affairs professionals.
- *What We Look For:**
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, Law, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- 15+ years of relevant experience in public affairs, government relations, or policy advocacy, with a proven ability to influence legislative outcomes.
- Executive presence and a consistent track record of leading cross-functional teams, ideally in telecom/technology.
- Demonstrated success advising executive leadership and shaping public narratives in high-stakes environments.
- Prior experience on Capitol Hill, Executive Branch, or working with relevant reporters, influencers, and policymakers.
- Strong media instincts with expertise in traditional and emerging media, including rapid response and crisis communications.
- Innovative thinker, comfortable taking risks to advance public policy positions.
- Ability to lead and adapt in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, especially during organizational transformation.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, able to articulate nuanced issues clearly.
