How hard is it to find a good education in our nation's capital? Not too hard, thanks to Howard University. The predominantly African-American university enrolls about 10,500 students and has a low student-teacher ratio of about 8:1. The school offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees in areas such as engineering, education, divinity, dentistry, law, medicine, history, political science, music, and social work. Howard University's endowment is about $400 million. Its operating budget is nearly $885 million. Established in 1867, the school was named after one of its founders, General Oliver O. Howard, a Civil War hero who was commissioner of the Freedman's Bureau.
